12:28 am - parc de géant
it's sleeping giant robot day, were you aware?

(text on the monument says "here they slumber")

i may do a quick digital paint based on this, sort of like this little thing here:

6:40 pm - this needs to be shared
my new favorite thing:

Please Say Something - Full Length from David OReilly on Vimeo.

12:35 am - here, try this

i changed a lot of things, but the main thing is the pace of action, since i think i can only realistically do tuesday-thursday updates for now. a whole month straight of a single scene just doesn't appeal to me right now.

the lettering is now a font, just a freebie from somewhere that i'm not certain i like. i tried to make a font from my handwriting, but it'd take a lot of work to make it look anywhere near decent.

so, i'd be interested to hear if anyone has comments on the changes, etc.

i submit the first-attempt page 1 for comparison:

7:51 pm - positive attitude? what?
i'm usually all grumpy when i post. it's probably not so fun to read, i would wager. i'm not usually grumpy in real life, i feel, but these things aren't coming across right.

anyway, so i've been doing some drawings to try to make my comic look like what i want it to look like, and so far these are the closest thing:

it's a lot closer to how i sketch, and i want to keep a sketchy, loose quality to it. these inks have no underdrawings, but i'll do some minimal pencils to keep stuff under control and in the right place. the idea is to keep it fast and light, so i'll also be drawing smaller (previous pages were 9"x12", these will probably be 7"x10" or so).

next i'll do up some actual pages, text and panels and everything, and see how that goes.

12:10 am - um
so i decided the art and dialog thus far is incredibly "stiff" and i am incredibly "not happy with it" and drawing even one more page was something i was avoiding these last several days. had a lot of disappointment lately, kind of a theme really, kind of an extended phase of things. "the age of disappointment," that's what this is. sorry, kid, you're not gonna be an astronaut.

i'm gonna change what the comic looks like, probably re-make those seven or so pages so far, hopefully i won't hate it so much. if i still hate it, i don't know. there's always the ever-popular moping around and posting lame lifedrawing scans.

3:20 am - page seven

this may well be my favorite page so far. i'm still figuring out how much i can draw in a given time span, and adjusting thusly.

3:28 am - page six
at long last:

i got called in four hours early to one of my jobs, unexpectedly, which destroyed my drawing schedule. and then this page took me a while to put together, hence it's 3:30 am posting. i'll attempt to work up a buffer to prevent such atrocities in the future, but for now i'll just be happy if i get two more pages done this week. my life hates my other life right now.

i wish i had time to draw that car three separate times, for some nice subtle variety in line character, but i just didn't. it's something i tend to notice and admire in others' work: aw man look they re-drew that thing each time wow

2:39 am - page five!

monday became tuesday while i wasn't looking. in fact, i'll probably have to do just four updates per week, on account of needing mondays to take care of all sorts of other stuffy-stuff. did i mention i have three jobs, not including drawing? it's a favorite thing for me to say, lately, because i barely believe it myself. i should feel lucky, i suppose.

also been doing more figure drawing, and to save you the boredom of naked people you can take a look at it all over here on my conceptart.org thread, as well as a bunch of other crap i drew over the last three years. it's pretty embarassingly bad! woo!

no, you (i?) don't know where this (thing?) is going. (perhaps you never presumed to?)

tune back in on monday.

12:07 am - page threeeeee

back to using the brush for the panel borders, but i steadied my hand this time, and i'm probably gonna stick to that. already considering making a font from my handwriting vs. hand-lettering everything. these are things you need to know.

still not sure about those panel borders. something decent will emerge there eventually.

11:53 pm - i started a new comic thing

it's a step in the right direction, i hope, and you can (also) see it here. i'll be cross-posting here for a little while, so people will at least see it. the site also has a fresh look, which i will be tweaking as the week goes on.

i would love to know what you think, especially as things progress.

12:48 am - arts
i tried some cartooning, somewhat okay:

seven more of these... )

also here's a bunch of lifedrawing, because everyone finds lifedrawing so goddamn fascinating...

five more of these... )

i don't know, i think i'm getting...better? not been making comics lately, so it's hard to say. in theory the art is now "good enough" to be "passable", but i'm still not convinced.

4:51 pm - ate a pbj today, and some pizza
proof that i am alive: hello.

got a lotta art to share but not near a scanner right now. sitting in the sun downtown is the current priority, something i'm sure you undersand rather well.

i see young folk filling out job applications just all over the dang place, and can't help but think their time is better spent. it's sad, truly, but you're just not likely to get a job in the Usual Way.

12:53 am - yep

i read all of flight vol. 5 today, in a single sitting. it was kind of...fluffy...for such a big book. everyone in it can tell a story visually, no doubt there, but i find the writing a little lightweight, a little unfinished at times, and a little preachy at others. it's like (nearly) everyone is making some sort of parable, clumsily, with kind of a young-adult vibe? thank goodness for graham annable, though.

comics are stories, and in stories the writing counts. lots of room for improvement there, i think. any given episode of "this american life" has more interest and drama than nearly the entire flight series as a whole. so far.

(and yes, i listen to t.a.l. enough that at any given moment i can clearly imagine ira glass narrating my actions, making remarks, drawing conclusions.)

12:32 am - yeah, well
i like the idea of this squid, if not so much its execution:

this came out okay, for being reference-free:

it's not that i haven't been drawing, see. or even drawing comics. it's more that i haven't drawn much worth sharing, and the last comic i made is an embarassment of self-pity and...other issues. high standards i might well have, but crap is crap.

for example )

whine whine whine. you have my permission to slap me in the goddamn head.

11:04 pm - why yes, i do have a sketchbook
i'm just lazy is all. i don't even tie my shoes, because i never bothered to learn how and i never bother to buy them or wear them in the first place. point is, i didn't draw nothin' at all for a few weeks and discovered it takes some work to get back to drawing decently (who knew?). still not satisfied enough to make a new comic, but things are improving steadily...

here follows ten choice cuts of porcine wonder, by which i mean sketchbook pages )

i have been watching dollhouse (via hulu), and i couldn't really tell you why but i dig it. people been giving it bad reviews and such, and their complaints are valid, and yet i am watching it. not out of some absurd devotion to all things joss whedon, not out of some hope or expectation that it will "get better". i watch because i enjoy it, now, in its current form. i don't care why i like it, but i like it.

here is a doodle of mr. dominic, a man with ambition:

6:41 pm - i am published in a book that you can buy at bookstores
"i saw you..." missed connection comics

it is an anthology julia wertz put together and it has a whole bunch of people in it, including me(!), and it is available on amazon and, more importantly, at powell's.

if you've been to portland, you know about powell's. as someone who grew up in this town, hittin' the shelves regularly since i was a child of eight, i cannot tell you how awesome it is that i can now stroll on in, bee-line to the coffee room/graphic novel section, and on that shelf is a book that you can buy that has my comic in it. it just completely makes my day!

so, go and read it! it is pretty awesome! totally worth your time and money.

11:57 pm - getting the lead out (ba-dum)
i've been meaning to draw my hourly day but i've been all intimidated! haven't drawn anything more than stick-figures in over a month. so i snuck into the ol' art school and drew some naked ladies:

folks never seem too interested in these things as compared to comics or characters, and i can understand that, but this is the brick-and-mortar stuff that gets me comfortable making anything else. gonna share these 'cause i feel like it, thbbpbpb.

anyhow, these are all quick doodles really, no more than 10" tall and no more than 10 minutes each...

three more under the cut )

i also finished out a sketchbook i been workin' in since july 15th '08. get to crack a new one! hooray! watch me fill it up by the end of...spring?
